NORMAN JOHN HOLMES JR.
June 7, 1929 - April 25, 2008
Norm was an amazingly talented and creative person - a dog trainer, horseman, writer, inventor, jeweler, pilot, artist, scuba diver; he had been a dental tech, corpsman, race car driver, musician, figure skater, tennis player, jockey, and more that I am not remembering.
He respected, was considerate of, and enjoyed dogs and horses more than anyone I have known. His passion was that people understand that animals don't think/understand/communicate in negatives, only positive thoughts and intentions. Humans think mostly in negatives- about what we are afraid will happen, or don't want our dogs to do.
If we think of what we don't want then that is what the dog perceives as desired. We must constantly think of what we desire in order to communicate that to the dogs. If we can control our minds we can let our dogs know our wishes, if we can't, we give them the wrong message and then are disappointed in them. Dogs being given the wrong message, and then told they have failed, hurt Norm so much to watch that he would often intervene uninvited. He just had to show people that if they told the dog what they wanted, instead of don't do this or that, the dog would be able to succeed.
He was my teacher, lover, friend, and protector, I miss him.
